Anne, SQL Server doesn't release memory because it figures if you are running a query that needs 8GB RAM now, chances are you will need to repeat the process later. Something about the process of returning memory to the pool and then rerequesting it being too inefficient or something overly technical that made my head spin.

You may want to reconfigure the MAX MEMORY in SQL Server. The formula suggested by Jonathan Kehayias is take the total available RAM on the server, remove 1 GB (for the OS), 1 GB for every 4 GB in the machine between 4 and 16 GB, and 1 GB for every 8 GB in the machine above 16 GB (See https://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/jonathan/how-much-memory-does-my-sql-server-actually-need/)

Once you have this number you can configure your server using the tutorial here (https://community.rackspace.com/products/f/18/t/1693).

I hope this helps.

Sorry for the errant message meant for our internal TMS users.  Since upgrading to TMS 2016 running on SQL 2014, we have been struggling with the system getting incredibly slow.  Our IT department thinks it is because SQL doesn’t release memory after it has completed a task so more of the memory gets used over time.  Rebooting seems to solve this until the next time.  We are going to implement a monthly reboot to see if that solves it.  Has anyone else had this experience and have other solutions to suggest?  Thanks.

TMS has gotten very slow again so Tom is going to re-boot the server.  Please log out of TMS so he can do this.  We’ll send out an e-mail when it is back up.  Thanks!
