Sorry, not 'ISSN'. I meant the ISNI number...

As with others, we are capturing the VIAF URL in the Alt Number field, as well as (separately) ULAN, Wikidata ID and ISSN numbers. This may prove superfluous, but we think initially if we're touching the records we may as well. (And we doing it manually for the moment). We have not encountered any URLs or other authority IDs that are to long for the Alt Number field thus far.

Hello TMS list,

I was wondering where in your Constituents Module you add information from VIAF, etc.? We are looking to start adding that data and were wondering if anyone had suggestions for best practices?

Thank you,

Sylvia,

Constituent alternate numbers - using the full VIAF URL as the number.

Jeffrey, Sylvia-
We do use the AltNums field, but are using it in a somewhat unintuitive way
in order to accommodate URLs of any length:

The URL goes into Remarks. The Description is "Biography" (or you could use
"Authority" or something else). And the AltNum field contains the name of
the source, in this case VIAF. We currently collect the URLs for VIAF,
Library of Congress Authorities, Getty's Union List of Artist Names (ULAN),
as well as Wikidata and Wikipedia.

I'm curious how you're harvesting the VIAF urls.

Hi,

We also use Alternate Numbers. We capture the permalink as the alternate number and assign the source as the description. We do this with VIAF as well as other name authorities, such as ULAN and Library of Congress Authorities, etc.

We pull the URL/source in our API, and deliver it alongside our objects data.

Cheers,
Marin

Same as Jeff: Constituent alternate numbers – using the full VIAF URL as the number and with ULAN chosen from the drop down as source of the data.

Has anyone had to reconfigure the AltNum field to accommodate especially
long URLs?

Interesting topic  ----

While attempting to wrap our brains around how to synchronize our
constituent entries and workflow with the very large National Archives
Name/Organization authority (basically the OCLC name authority with
millions of additional entries and growing daily) -- at least for what we
term 'Notable Constituents' -- the Presidential Libraries Museums are also
considering synchronizing TMS data with SNAC (depending on where the agency
as a whole decides to go). *See*

http://socialarchive.iath.virginia.edu/

The National Archives is a core member of the SNAC cooperative -- in early
stages of development, but active and available for authority work and
highly promising for cross-discipline audiences.

Other than for ULAN data, is anyone attempting to synchronize constituent
data elements such as Display or Sort names, biographies, or other data
with authoritative data from other sources?  If so, what data elements and
from what sources?
