Conservator (Textiles)

Open Period: September 26, 2017 – October 10, 2017

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, located on the Mall in Washington DC with off-site storage in Maryland, is seeking an experienced textiles conservator that will be responsible for the care, preservation and technical research on all textile objects within the museum’s 19-21st Century collection.  The textiles conservator will have knowledge and experience with conservation and collection maintenance techniques and procedures as well as current exhibition and display practices. The incoming conservator will create protocols and procedures for safe handling and storage of the textiles collection, will do testing and analysis for research and understanding of materials, will create mounts and mannequins for exhibition display of textiles and costumes, will be knowledgeable on current museum practices and perform treatments in a variety of media with experience treating and preserving modern synthetics.

o   design, propose, document, and complete proposed conservation treatments on a wide variety of textile materials within the collection;
