You can only search a phrase whose word length is shorter then your defined max length. For instance, if your maximum length was set to 3 (the system default), you could not perform a phrase search for "President of the United States". The larger your maximum length, the more rows that need inserting into TermSearch - which (theoretically) slows down field update times and increases the size of your database.

Ok - very helpful, Chad --  thanks!!

So the payoff (or consequences) of defining "maximum word length" is (are)....??

Certain fields in TMS are indexed in the TermSearch table, these include titles, descriptions, provenance, etc. The full list can be seen by going to Maintenance > Database > Maintain Search Terms in the Objects module.

These fields are broken down into a list of keywords - that are not in your Stop Word list (Maintenance > Authorities > Other > Stop Words) and have a length greater than a configuration value (System.SearchTerm.MinimumLength).

When you search for Cat Dog (using AND) the system will look for entries that have the keyword Cat and the keyword Dog in the TermSearch table. This search would retrieve a piece titled "The Content Cat and the Mischievous Dog".  However, if you wanted to search for the phrase  "Cat Dog" (one word followed by the next word) this requires phrase indexing (System.SearchTerm.WordBreaker.Phrases). If you do not have phrase indexing configured, TMS will not return any records, even if there is an object with the title "Behold: the elusive cat dog".

OK, I am going to ask the dumb question:  what is "phrase indexing"??

A question for institutions that have phrase indexing turned on in TMS: What have you configured as your maximum word length?

Many thanks ~Chad
