MoMSers,

Our partners at MuseWeb Foundation, which provides critical assistance for us in operating all of the elements that make up the Stories from Main Street (SFMS) project, have just started a monthly newsletter for SFMS that provides interesting information on how many people are accessing content about rural communities that has been flowing from your states to the Smithsonian over the past several years. Most of that content comes to us from host communities and organizations, primarily through special projects they’ve done over the years, or through the Stories: YES youth projects that have now taken place in 19 states. Since 2011, more than 1,300 stories have been shared through SFMS and it continues to grow. MuseWeb continues to help us catalog the content, track it, and better understand what it tells us about the communities we serve.

We’re getting more intentional about how we use and track this content. Stories appear regularly on our social media feeds. We used a number of stories in Crossroads: Change in Rural America, created special playlists on SoundCloud, and we’ve actively shared collections of stories with interested state humanities council partners. Additionally, we can help state partners and local hosts develop touch-screen kiosks for distributing this content. If you’re interested in exploring content that has come in from your state, please let me know. Or, if you would like to obtain copies of the content from your state for a special project, we’re happy to help with that too.

Have a great holiday week.

Many thanks,
Robbie

Over the Airwaves: Social Media Exposure

Each month, MuseWeb shares Stories from Main Street narratives across a variety of social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) as well as through its monthly "Museletter." While MW captures the reach (impressions) of stories, we also document the engagement the stories generate. Engagement comes in the form of "likes," "shares", and "comments," and are often the best measure of how you've connected with a digital audience.

  *   Twitter: 52 engagements
  *   Facebook: 69 engagements
  *   Instagram: 91 engagements
  *   MuseLetter: 17 engagements
Though stories are predominately audio-based, Instagram (a visual platform) has delivered the highest rate of engagement ("likes," and "comments"), relative to the number of impressions. On the other hand, Facebook is delivering the highest number of clicks to the stories themselves.

SoundCloud: Story Plays

Listeners from all over the world are enjoying Stories from Main Street on MW's Be Here Stories channel. Most story plays are originating in the United States, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, while Dallas, Chicago, and Amsterdam are the cities with the most listeners.

In total, SoundCloud has logged more than 6,930 plays of SFMS narratives! There were 433 plays in the last 30 days alone.

Museums in Strange Places Features MoMS!

We were thrilled with the final cut of Hannah Hethmon's audio documentary about Museum on Main, featured in her popular podcast, Museums in Strange Places<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmuseumsandtheweb.us4.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D71f2b910406e41b9c635e9fc4%26id%3D3a71634d15%26e%3Dc4c89a90d1&data=02%7C01%7Cdavispr%40si.edu%7Ce1c9abb1b652434082d808d6fbd93c08%7C989b5e2a14e44efe93b78cdd5fc5d11c%7C0%7C0%7C636973307776938366&sdata=4Pdg3lB1RZPWy2Gn4vTlf%2BCwZS6P7Kbv0nnA0cH1QwI%3D&reserved=0> in June.

Since it's release just a few weeks ago, the podcast has been downloaded 410 times. So far, reaction to the podcast has been overwhelmingly positive! Hannah will be working with MW this summer and into the fall on another series of stories that center on the Water/Ways exhibition.

Behind the Scenes: Rights and Permissions, PI

As the collective understanding of digital content evolves, so too does our commitment to keeping up with it. This month, we isolated stories that contained PII (personally identifiable information) to ensure that permissions were secured and names of minors were edited out from stories. In addition, where stories were submitted through external servers, such as Dropbox, we've contacted the story recorders to ensure that we have copies of the consent forms that were used at the time of recording.
