The Morgan classifies watercolors as drawings. This is, in part, following the work of "Descriptive Terminology for Works of Art on Paper" (https://www.philamuseum.org/doc_downloads/conservation/DescriptiveTerminologyforArtonPaper.pdf).

We recently re-classified our ‘watercolors’  to have their own classification of ‘watercolors’ because there was too much confusion and debate surrounding the ‘well is more of a drawing, or more of a watercolor?’.

We assign it on our end and if the curator feels strongly that it should go the other way to drawing, then we will reclassify is as such.

Hi Julie,

We also had this problem and we just ended up giving Watercolour it’s own classification, because there was too much inconsistency when trying to classify them as either painting, or drawing.

Good morning all,

Our watercolors are curated by the ‘Prints, Drawings and Photographs’ department, and we classify them under ‘Drawings and Watercolors’.  As far as I understand, like Evelyn said, our watercolors are stored with the drawings, charcoals and pastels.

Good Morning,

We classify them as paintings.  The unframed works are stored in flat files alongside various drawings, prints, and mixed media.  The framed works are hung with other framed pieces.

We store and preserve them with the drawings and charcoals but I would classify the medium as paint. Evelyn

Hello,

I’ve had this problem at other institutions in the past and wanted to know what other museums are doing. Is a watercolor classified as a drawing or a painting? In the AAT the term watercolor is called paint. However, I know there is a long history of watercolors being considered drawings or preliminary sketches. Additionally, I know that with multiple classifications in TMS, they could be listed as both, but the curators think that would be confusing. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!
