External Email - Exercise Caution

Hello all

I’m not Danni but I’m happy to share a couple of our very basic guides for Sites and Events. Here at Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums we’ve recently started recording City Plaques on our Sites module, allowing us to connect objects to these physical locations and have it all linked together on our soon-to-be re-launched website. Like the Harvard Peabody we record image requests, research visits as well as public engagement/social media activity (e.g. a weekly column in a local newspaper) in the Events module. This is all in support of my somewhat overzealous interpretation of SPECTRUM 5.0’s “Use of Collections” procedure, which I feel is only going to become more important over time, especially for public institutions such as ourselves, in justifying and evidencing what our collections can do.

Hope this is of interest.

Kind regards,

Thomas

Hi Danni,

I’d be very keen to see your Events guide, if you’re able to share it. Thanks very much!

Hi Caroline,

At the Harvard Peabody we use Events to track researcher visits, Image requests, Class Use events, and a few other “event type things”. We also use the Bibliography module if the researcher produces a manuscript,  paper, journal etc. and link that record to any related or cited objects. David has created a pretty in depth guide on Events for these purposes, I can ask him if we can share it with you, if you’re interested.

Hi Caroline;

At the Royal Ontario Museum, some of us in the Natural History Department use the Events module to record Collecting Events to which we link our specimens.  Not sure if this is what you meant by “anything other than their intended use”.

Is anyone using the other modules i.e. events/ exhibitions/ sites for anything other than their intended use?

Also in a slightly related but different question, how are people keeping track of research being done on their objects? Do you use any specific module within TMS to store all the information? We are thinking about following the Harvard Peabody Museum and using exhibitions module for our research, but I’d like to know how other institutions are keeping track of extra research data. The objects module doesn’t really have a good way of storing the researcher/ data in one place.

Thanks!
