External Email - Exercise Caution

Hi, Anna -

We have been working on piloting our first public-facing eMuseum over the last year, and a big part of the pilot process was getting through accessibility testing, then going through it over again when we migrated the pilot to 6.0.  Some of the fixes were pretty easy like achieving acceptable color contrast, though our color/font choices are limited to begin with, since they strictly perscribed by federal website requirements.

Alt texts was probably the biggest stumper, and we have barely begun to address it.  Not only are we in need of some pared down agency level guidance, but wondering where the resources are going to come from to write all of these entries (intern/volunteer projects?), and the best way to source as much as possible from TMS. At first we thought we could just throw the object title in there, then quickly realized that this will only work for some situations. It falls apart immediately if you are publishing multiple images for one object. So first lesson - better to source alt texts from the media module - we are thinking of using the Media Description field or a text entry (and I should note, we retainonly one rendition per media record).

The other clincher is that depending on how the image is used on a webpage - e.g.  as an 'example' image or a link - vs appearing in the context of the Object details page/catalog entry (in which case the surrounding descriptive metadata could eliminate the need for alt texts (still waiting on a ruling about that from mother NARA) the alt text requirement may be different.

All very challenging.

So far, the best resource we have come across for mastering alt texts and accessibility in general is the WebAim website   https://webaim.org/

Very interested to know how others have developed alt text protocols for eMuseum.

I wonder if anyone else is dealing with this at the moment?

Because of new legislation around web accessibility we have to write an accessibility report and publish it on our web site and explore ways of making our site more accessible. We have used a diagnostic tool to look at our eMuseum portal and we can see we need to make some changes, like adding alt text to images. Is anyone else in the middle of writing a report or exploring ways of making their eMuseum Portal note accessible.
