External Email - Exercise Caution

Ariel, Using the same constituent with alternate names is the best practice when the entity has changed their name; although beware, changes as the result of mergers and acquisitions, may be considered as a new constituent.

As with the names, you can establish multiple biolines for the constituent. This feature was added because some curators could come to consensus over the nationality of particular artists. Nevertheless, you are correct that you would have to manually select the bio associated with the name everytime you link that constituent to record, and want to change the name.

To my knowledge, the related objects would show all objects related to the constituent, not just the ones attached to the main name. If you are able to document that this is not the case, then I would suggest contact GS Support. This is clearly a bug that needs fixing.

Best, Chad

Hello - I am curious how you all handle a constituent that has had multiple names over its lifespan? For example, a manufacturer that has changed company names 5 times from 1890-today.

They currently exist all as separate records but then there is no way to know that they are all actually the same constituent. I experimented with adding them as alternate names under the record of the first name, but when I try to see all related object records, it only provides me with objects featuring the main constituent. When adding an alternate name to a record, you also have to manually get rid of the display bio and can't add in the correct dates for that particular name. How do you handle this in your database? Any tips? Thanks!
