External Email - Exercise Caution

I’ve used that tool also, many times, with great results.

I would go beyond saying the interface isn’t user friendly – this sort of thing is exactly why Mac users laugh manically at stuff Windows users put up with. I’ve been a computer nerd for 45 years now, one of my first jobs was using a teletype machine with punched paper tape, and the BRU screen still makes me cringe!

But the price is right and it really does do a fine job once you learn how to use it.

External Email - Exercise Caution

Hi Amanda,

I’ve used a tool called Bulk Rename Utility (bulkrenameutility.co.uk) for many years. The interface isn’t very user-friendly, but it can rename folders/files in many ways and has regex functionality.

Let me know if you need any help with this.

Best,

David

Hi Amanda,

There are two parts to this

  1. Renaming the files
    • There is software out there that you can use to rename files.
    • Alternatively, use a programming language like python.
  1. Updating the MediaFiles table in TMS.
    • This can be tricky because you need to avoid replacing the extension period separator (ie. '.jpg')
    • This is done using SQL.

I can help you with this if needed.

Hi all,

Our institution has included our object ID as the filename for many years including the punctuation_2018.4.jpg etc.  As we are starting to institute digital preservation policies and procedures, it was recommended to remove periods and add in an underscore and only have periods as part of the file extension.  This would mean renaming the thousands of files on our servers and files in TMS.  Has anyone performed a similar update or have any other recommendations?

Thanks,

Amanda
