External Email - Exercise Caution

We’re a slightly odd case in that only a small portion of our overall collection was migrated into TMS initially (we’re working on it) and what was chosen was largely chosen to facilitate making the eMuseum site with the pieces our president/curator wanted to highlight. Collections was not involved with the selection or with the development of the initial classifications, as this went down around the time the last collections manager left and I started. So the initial scheme developed was:

Fine Art

            Drawing

                                Sketch

                                Silhouette

                                Wash Drawing

            Painting

                                Genre

                                Landscape

                                Miniature

                                Portrait

                                Still Life

            Sculpture

                                Bust

                                Death Mask

                                Figural

                                Life Mask

                                Relief

Folk Art

            Folk Painting

                                Double Portrait

                                Drawing

                                Genre

                                Landscape

                                Miniature

                                Portrait

                                Sign

                                Silhouette

                                Still Life

                                Theorem

                                Vogt Drawings

            Folk Sculpture

                                Animal

                                Bust

                                Figural

                                Relief

                                Weathervane

Native American Art

            Arctic Region

            California Region

            Great Basin Region

            Northern Athapaskan Region

            Northwest Coast Region

            Southwest Region

            The Plain Region

            Woodlands Region

Presumably the curatorial team will add a block under Fine Art for prints once we migrate them in …

Once we started cataloguing new acquisitions in TMS, I was allowed to create a system of classifications to relate to historic non-art items, which I based on the nomenclature system while bearing in mind the specific needs of our collection. We don’t search by classification or subclassification often (in part because the database is still mostly empty) but when I’ve done tests there haven’t been any problems.

External Email - Exercise Caution

Hello, TMSers!

We are reviewing our "Classification" field list. Would anyone be willing to share their classifications? Has anyone had any issue in searching on or reporting on sub-classifications?

Thank!

Fatima

I acknowledge that I live and work on the ancestral homelands of the Chickahominy, Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and Upper Mattaponi tribes of central Virginia. I offer my deepest respect for their resilience and continued stewardship of their culture.
