Metadata Specialist

Full-time Contract

The Metadata Specialist has an affinity for information and, without effort, sees the connection between bits of information related to cataloging artifacts. RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide data management and metadata support through the standardization of terminology and updating of system records in the museum's collection information systems
• Catalogue and update collections records and metadata following the museum's authorities and data management standards
• Assist in the development and updating of procedural documentation training materials and system reports related to the museum's information systems following the museum's data management practices
• Review and import new data and media loaders to the database and perform content and quality checks on those records and assets as required
• Test new metadata processes, workflows, and procedures, providing related support and user training for the museum's information systems as required
• Provide weekly progress reports, research, and other requested project reports upon request.
• Perform other Digitization project-related duties as required

To sum up, the main intent of this grant-funded position is to provide assistance around a range of TMS administrative activities that will include general metadata cleanup as well as technical metadata tasks.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• A bachelor’s degree with a focus on heritage collections, information, and media management, or an acceptable equivalent in education and experience
• Minimum of 4 years experience working with relational databases, collections management systems and DAMS; The Museum System (TMS) and Piction preferred
• A broad understanding of both cultural artifacts and natural history specimens
• Advanced data manipulation and organization skills using a variety of software and tools
• Experience writing and developing Crystal Reports and/or SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS); familiarity with SQL
• Sound understanding of a wide variety of media formats
• Knowledge of current library, archival and museum metadata standards
• Intermediate MS office skills as well as data manipulation and transformation skills using a wide variety of software and tools
• Direct hands-on experience with relational databases, CMSs, and DAMs
