External Email - Exercise Caution
I’m not really sure what the best practice is, but I treat it essentially like PastPerfect’s classifications: broad categories that split into narrower ones. This is mainly because our curators came up with
a system like this for the art that was originally imported into TMS (we had an initial import of about 1000 object records, managed by the curators) and I followed that blueprint in creating a tiered system for organizing our historical collections (which
are due to be migrated at the end of this year).
For the most part, my system
is the one from Nomenclature/PastPerfect, it’s just tweaked to simplify where we don’t need the granularity or be more detailed where we do need more categories. For instance:
Trade and Work
Agriculture
Animal Husbandry
Crop Processing
Hops
Hunting and Fishing
Planting and Harvesting
Sugaring
Containers
Craft
Masonry
Medical and Scientific
Metalworking
Printing
Textile
Woodworking
Ice Harvesting
Maintenance
Firefighting
Groundskeeping
Laundry and Cleaning
Merchandising
Mining
Models
I think this system will make it easier for us to find categories of objects for exhibition in the future.

Subject: How do you tackle Classifications in TMS?
External Email - Exercise Caution
Hello everyone,
Apologies for the many questions lately! I appreciate the patience, nonetheless. This one has to do with Classifications.
How is your institution handling Classifications?
Do you go as far as creating Sub-Classifications for your Main Classifications or do you keep them broad (and if so, why?)
And, if you do have just one broad term, where do you go to define something more specific?
Thank you!
Best,
Michelle
