Monday night we had another great turn out for the second in the Ocean Talks! Marine Science Lecture Series presented by the Perry Institute for Marine Science and the Jupiter Dive Center and hosted by the Town of Jupiter.  Dr. Craig Layman of Yale University gave a compelling talk about the status and value of estuaries and community involvement in restoring critical estuary habitats.  If you missed it, we hope that you will join us for the next lecture on November 7, 2005 at 7 p.m. at the Town of Jupiter Community Center (210 Military Trail, Jupiter, FL).  The guest speaker for that evening will be Dr. Laurie Richardson of Florida International University in Miami.  She will be speaking about Threats to Coral Health.

Dr. Laurie Richardson conducts interdisciplinary research into coral diseases using microbiology and molecular techniques to track pathogens on reefs.  Her field research, conducted under water using SCUBA, includes surveying, monitoring, and tracking of disease outbreaks in corals.  In particular, she has been tracking both short-term and long-term effects of black band disease and white plague in corals.  Her primary research site is the Florida Keys, where she has worked since 1990.  She also conducts underwater research into coral diseases in the Bahamas, and has many research collaborators throughout the wider Caribbean.  Dr. Richardson’s ground breaking research has been published in such prestigious journals as Nature, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, and Coral Reefs.

Details for the December lecture will follow soon.
