Hi Susan -
We are not using Virtual Objects, so I don't have any advice on how you
could use this feature. BUT, we do catalog drawings (and other things) with
images on both sides, and also possess books that reference many items in
our collection. This is how I do it.
For the drawings, each side gets it's own object record, since each side may
have different subject matter, mediums, conservation issues, exhibition
history, etc. This is how I number each record for the single item.

2004.1.1 Verso
In regards to Object Level/Object Count on the Other tab, the first record
(2004.1.1 Recto), Object Level is set to "Item" and the Object Count = 1. I
also have a user defined field on this tab called "Audit" which can be set
to either "yes" or "no". For this item record, Audit = Yes.
In regards to Object Level/Object Count for the second record (2004.1.1
Verso), Object Level is set to "Item Part" and the Object Count = 1. The
"Audit" field is set to "No".
In regards to the book (assuming that it is a non-accessioned item), we
catalog it in the Bibliography section of the database, and link objects
that are referenced in it on the Citations tab. If the book itself is an
accessioned collection item, I would probably catalog it as an object, and
link items referenced in it on the Relations tab, and set the Relation Type
to "References".

I am interested to know if--and how--others are using Virtual Objects. We
are considering using them for objects like books that contain numerous
catalogued works, or for objects that have works on both recto and verso.
This has led to a renewed discussion of the use of components, object level
and objects groups (created by making object-to-object links.) If anyone has
advice on this issue, I would appreciate it.
