Hi Frances,
Our TMS is used for three different departments, so some of these answers
are conditional.

1. Do you record a 'Gender' for your Object-related Constituents (i.e.
artists) in TMS? (y / n) Yes. In fact we increasingly record the gender
wherever it can be assumed, not just artists.

2. If yes, have you adopted a more extensive term list for gender identity
than the traditional male / female? (y / n) Yes. We have Female, Male,
Other, and No Gender (Institution or Collective). I'm not so comfortable
with "Other", though "Transgender" is insufficient, too
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_P-Orridge> for our purposes. And
tracking every possibility could get dicey, so "Other" it is for now. The
"No Gender" is of course redundant of the Constituent Type value, but it's
purpose is explained below.

3. Do you assign a gender term only based on an individual's
self-assignment? (y / n) I'm pulling a lot of it from Wikidata*, which is
itself pulling often from other sources (ie. ULAN). Otherwise, we are
assuming or have found a record of gender elsewhere (censuses, individual's
self-assignment, etc.).

4. Is your recorded artist gender data for internal use only? (y, n or
n/a) Depends, see below.

5. If it's published online, can website users search or filter your
collections by gender? (y, n or n/a) NYPL has a pretty minimal catalog
<http://wallachprintsandphotos.nypl.org/catalog> specific to the Prints and
the Photographs collections. This does not allow for this filtering. But
the Photography Collection has a resource, the Photographers' Identities
Catalog (PIC <http://pic.nypl.org>) for research on photographers. You can
search & filter the 125,000 bios by gender, dates, locations, processes
used, etc. Adding "No Gender" to our genders was a way to allow for
searching only on studio names, without creating another entire facet in
the interface. This is also an alternate point of entry for our Prints &
Photographs Online Catalog. So you could search for Female Mexican
Photographers in the NYPL Photo Collection
<http://pic.nypl.org/map/?address.AddressTypeID=*&address.CountryID=*&bbox=*&Nationality=Mexican&gender.TermID=2027998&process.TermID=*&role.TermID=2028040&format.TermID=*&biography.TermID=*&collection.TermID=2028165&DisplayName=*&Date=*&mode=2>,
and then (click one of the names to "open" the record) you can click
through to the results in our catalog. But this is for photo related names,
not printmakers (unless they also are photographers).

*I'm working across all names indiscriminately now, using Wikidata to pull
back info (genders, occupations, locations, altnames, Wikipedia links, and
especially links to authority sources- LoC, ULAN, VIAF...).

Best,
David
