Late reply to this now old question (just back from vaca) – we’ve done something similar as well with creating regions. We created New England as a region, and then put Connecticut, Massachusetts, etc. under this, which works well. The regions can be very handy.

This is the geography thesaurus we set up. There are a lot of levels, primarily as our data is quite varied in its detail. We also defined the regions using some google maps and thick red pen. We use the British Vice County system, which is the system used by biological recorders. There are weaknesses in the schema. Rivers and oceans are a nightmare to handle, as they cross over all kinds of boundaries. We’re still on TMS 2010, but we’re hoping that the new features in later versions of TMS for linking thesaurus terms will enable us to handle these better.

We use alternate terms to define the names of old states or alternative spellings, which makes finding names easier. But again, this throws up problems when the boundaries of the old state doesn’t correspond with the present boundaries.

This is the basic outline of ours. Our geography is completely split out from our other attributes. So we just link the Geography Xrefs directly to that.

From Continent we break down to county, then state, and county if applicable, then town, and even to local names within towns. Works really well – we can search for somethink like all of Europe by just clicking the ‘include narrower terms’ part of the search.

I hope that helps answer your question! Let me know if it doesn’t make sense…

Hi Suzanne –

Do you mean you are looking for what Geography Types people have created? Or how they’ve set up the actual Geography Authority scheme? (We didn’t get the TGN either – being the Connecticut Historical Society, we figured we could add stuff like Africa and other non-Connecticut locations as needed.)

Subject: Advice needed on Attributes

Hello, wise TMS users. Our museum did not get the TGN when we originally converted to TMS because most of the geographical terms were not needed for our collection cataloguing. However, I am now trying to create an attribute that would make it easy to find all of the works created in Europe. I have played around with Geography/ Continent/ Europe on the Constituent record as well as creating an Attribute for Location/Continent/Europe. If anyone already has this functionality, could you send me a screen shot or a “best practices” recommendation for this purpose? I also need to do the same thing for Africa, so I suspect that I should add a geographical context for every object related constituent. I would love to hear how other people have dealt with this.
