The Z39.50 plug-in appears to load the ISBN as the reference number, though I've only tested this on a handful of records. We are just beginning to use the Bibliography module and are most likely going to use the ISBN for consistency.

We wanted to use ISBNs but then we found a number of the books we wanted to enter were too old to have them. We haven't used Bibliography extensively, but in a pilot project we were working on, we landed on system-generated numbers as the easiest. R.2010-001 and so on, kind of like the rendition numbers we have relied on for media.
I hope to pick the project back up soon with the help of Z39.50, and my plan is to stick with that same number system.

Hi Anne,

We use the ISB as the reference number when we enter in books into the bibliography module. Other items we just leave the field blank, but I'd love to know what other places are also doing!

Best Regards,

Subject: Bibiography reference numbers

Hello,

We want to enter bibliography records in TMS and need some advice. Does anyone have a recommended system for choosing reference numbers for the bibliography record? Or is it just as easy to have TMS automatically assign the reference number? We are leaning towards the latter but want to know if anyone has found a good way to do this or a reason why we shouldn't.

Thanks,
Anne
