Rodger,

Alternate names are available in the Constituent Lookup. Note in this
example how a search for "Wilhelmina" returns the constituent "Queen
Caroline" because of the alternate name "Wilhelmina Charlotte Caroline". It
does not display all of the alternate names, only those that meet your
search criteria.

The alternate names are grouped under their primary name, and for some
reason I cannot explain, are placed in brackets following an indented
repeat of the primary name.

You have noted a deficiency, in that the tool is looking for Constituents
records, not just name records, so you are correct that if a user did not
know the form of the name they wanted to search on they would need to
perform two searches.

Alternately, you could configure the Alternate Names Display Name field to
display as a distinct value list in Query Assistant.
