Hi Allison,

At the RMCA, we have a similar approach. We have created a separate, hierarchical thesaurus for the Culture names*. This allows us to create sub(sub)groups, but also, and rather important, add alternative names (spelling variations etc). However, we don't use the "Culture" field. Instead, we have decided to rebrand the Geography ThesXrefs to "Geography and Culture" and created a "Culture" ThesXrefType to link the cultures to the objects. This way, we can search for all the objects of the "main" cultural group, including the subgroups, or add 2 or more Cultures to 1 object (when in dubio), etc.

We do use the TGN (with many local terms as well) to add Geography ThesXrefs. Combining the 2 gives quite powerful search possibilities.

Hope this helps,

Dieter

*we currently have around 1600 TermMasters in this thesaurus and almost 9000 terms. We hope to release it one day as LinkedOpenData...

Subject: How are you using TMS Constituents for Indigenous Cultural Names?

Hello TMS users,

Most of our collection is by indigenous peoples and we are struggling with TMS capabilities for searching constituents from the Objects Module. We are looking at moving toward using the names people call themselves rather than the colonized names given them because it is more culturally appropriate. However, we understand users search for with all sorts of names. For example if a user searches "Sioux" the results should include all objects associated with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota as well as the communities within those groups such as Oglala, Brule, Blackfeet, etc. as well as the reservations they currently live on.

Does anyone have procedures for entering indigenous names?

We are using TMS2016 R2.

Thank you for your help and ideas. Please feel free to contact me off the listserv.

Allison
