To find just the objects that are connected to a particular alternate name you have to use Query Assistant
or Advanced Query in the Objects module, not Find Objects>Constituent Lookup (if I’m correctly
understanding what you’ve been trying to do).

If you set up the query group correctly in Config you can use the Query Assistant or Advanced Search to
find only those object records that have a particular alternate name selected for use.

This works the same for Ex-Coll. Related Constituent XRefs and Acq. Related Constituent XRefs.

The Alternate Names show in Constituent Lookup Assistant, but at this point, unless I’m missing something,
you cannot limit your results to a specific Alternate Name. In my hypothetical example below, I don’t see a
way to limit the results to “Stickley, Ltd.” When I click on the Alternate Name (or type the desired Alternate
Name in the Last Name field), TMS brings in the broader term. This makes sense if the Alternate Name is a
pseudonym. In our case the various names of the company are not pseudonyms.  We want to maintain a
way to easily limit our search to objects that are related to the distinct forms of the name.

I’m still thinking that separate constituents with a “master” constituent might be the best approach for us.

Thoughts?

Alternate names are available in the Constituent Lookup. Note in this example how a search for "Wilhelmina" returns the constituent "Queen Caroline" because of the alternate name "Wilhelmina Charlotte Caroline". It does not display all of the alternate names, only those that meet your search criteria.

The alternate names are grouped under their primary name, and for some reason I cannot explain, are placed in brackets following an indented repeat of the primary name.

You have noted a deficiency, in that the tool is looking for Constituents records, not just name records, so you are correct that if a user did not know the form of the name they wanted to search on they would need to perform two searches.

Alternately, you could configure the Alternate Names Display Name field to display as a distinct value list in Query Assistant.

I’ve experimented with this before and came to the conclusion that it’s a run-around solution in that it’s not fully functional with Constituent Lookup.

Am I understanding this correctly?  With this method one could use Constituent Lookup to see what forms of the name exist, and then switch over to QA and search the Alternate Name field on the specific name. Is that how you’ve done it?

Since the alternate name can be assigned to object records, ideally one would have the option of bringing the alternate name into Constituent Lookup.

(Sorry. I forgot to mention we are on TMS 2012.)

You can use Alternate Names for this. In the ConXref screen, you can select the exact name that you want to use for that object - the primary name is selected by default.

You can also reconfigure your query groups to be able to search on the alternate names (to find those with "Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Company") by adding fields from the Constituents Alternate Names node to your query groups.

In the past, I've done the same thing with journals in Bibliography, since some journals changed their names over time.

If anyone has dealt with varying company names I’d appreciate your input. In the musical-instrument world we quite often have companies that used different names at different times. For example, we currently have the following constituents:

Orville Gibson
Gibson, Inc.
Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Company
Gibson USA

These are not Alternate Names per se since they represent distinct periods of the company's history. We've been looking for a way to implement an umbrella-type term in order for us to retrieve, in this case, all objects made by all iterations of Gibson. But at the same time we want to be able to limit search results to a specific company name. I've been experimenting with the Alternate Names field but I don't think this will work for us for two reasons:

1. You cannot assign the specific Alternate Name to an object record. (TMS assigns the main constituent.)
2. You cannot limit your search results to a specific alternate name.

I've also experimented with Parent-Child relationships in the Constituent module, but this doesn't seem to accomplish much in terms of search and retrieval.

We are considering adding a master term, in this case, "Gibson", to each object record that has one of the constituents listed above. This would allow us to search on the master term, and also any of the specific iterations of the company.

If you have done this or something similar I'd love to hear from you.
